The Science Behind Breathwork (Yep, There’s Science Behind This Stuff)

Breathing’s pretty basic, right? In and out, keeps you alive, job done. But here’s the kicker: how you breathe changes everything—from your headspace to how you feel in your body.

  1. Mental Health: Keeping Your Head Straight
You ever notice how when you’re stressed, your breathing goes all weird? Fast, shallow, like you’re being chased by a dog down the high street. That’s your body stuck in “fight or flight” mode. But when you breathe deeply and slowly, you’re basically telling your brain, “Oi, calm down, everything’s alright.” This switches on your parasympathetic nervous system (yeah, big word, but it’s just the part of your body that chills you out). Less stress, less anxiety, and a clearer head. Lovely stuff.

  2. Physical Health: More Than Just Hot Air
Breathing right isn’t just good for your head—it does wonders for your body. Proper deep breathing gets more oxygen into your blood, giving your cells a boost (think of it like giving your phone a quick charge). It also helps your body detox. Seriously, you can actually breathe out toxins. Next time someone tells you you’re full of hot air, you can tell them, “Yeah, and it’s detoxifying me!”

  3. Spiritual Health: Getting a Bit Deep (But Not Too Deep)
Alright, hear me out—breathwork can get you in touch with something bigger than yourself. Call it spiritual, call it mindful, whatever floats your boat. When you’re controlling your breath, you’re in the present moment. Not thinking about that argument you had last week or stressing about tomorrow’s to-do list. Just here. Now. Breathing. It’s simple, but it’s powerful. And if that’s not a spiritual experience, I don’t know what is.

The Endocannabinoid System: Balancing Act

Now, let’s get a bit sciencey again (stick with me). Your body’s got this thing called the endocannabinoid system (ECS). It’s basically the body’s balancing act, keeping everything running smoothly—mood, stress, pain, you name it. And the goal? Homeostasis, or as I like to call it, “everything’s sweet” mode.

When you practice breathwork, you stimulate the vagus nerve, which is like the ECS’s best mate. They have a chat, sort out your neurotransmitters, and boom—you feel calm, balanced, and ready to take on the world (or at least that pile of washing up). This is what ECS Breathwork is all about.

What Is ECS Breathwork?

Right, here’s where it gets personal. After six years of mucking about with different breathwork styles, I’ve created my own: ECS Breathwork. It’s a mix of:

  • Ancient pranayama techniques (because those old yogis knew their stuff),

  • Modern diaphragmatic breathing (to get more oxygen in the tank), and

  • Meditative visualization (to get your head in the right place).

  •

Put all that together, and you’ve got a powerful, healing, and meditative experience that helps you balance your mind, body, and spirit. And no, you don’t need to sit in lotus position or burn incense (unless you’re into that).

Why I’m So Passionate About Breathwork

Listen, I’ve seen firsthand how powerful breathwork is. It’s helped me through stress, anxiety, physical pain—you name it. And the best part? It’s accessible. Everyone’s got breath, right? (If you don’t, well, you’ve got bigger problems).

I’m on a mission to make breathwork simple, relatable, and available to everyone—kids and adults alike. The world’s a stressful place, especially for the younger generation. If they can learn how to breathe through life’s challenges, they’re gonna be alright.

For the past five years, I’ve been running free breathwork sessions every Monday night. Why? Because I believe in this so much that I want as many people as possible to experience it. If you’re curious or fancy giving it a go, reach out. There’s no judgment, no pressure—just a bunch of people breathing and healing together.

Breathwork isn’t about being perfect or getting it right. It’s about being present, feeling alive, and healing from the inside out. So, wherever you are in your journey, remember one thing: Just breathe.
